Youth Employment Opportunities

Our Youth Employment programs are based on the belief that the better prepared for employment you are, the more successful you will be!

Our Employment Resource Office is open year round. We offer resources and workshops for all Youth in the community during fall and winter on a variety of topics that will give youth employment training plus assistance in the areas of resume writing, job searching, interview skills, and obtaining identification.

The two main programs we facilitate are the Youth Crew Program and First Jobs 4 Youth (FJ4Y).  Please see below for more information.

Youth Crew Program

Our Youth Crew program offers occasional odd jobs/training opportunities for local Youth, ages 11-16. Youth develop skills in yard care, snow and ice removal, cooking, baking and catering, building projects and community relationships.

A natural stage of progression, many Youth Crew participants become First Jobs 4 Youth participants as they come of age. Both programs build community connections, self-confidence, self-esteem, and human dignity, as well as provide a safe working environment where Youth are valued community members.

How to Participate in Youth Crew:

  1. Receive an application form from our Youth Crew Coordinator
  2. Fill the application form out and have your parent/guardian sign the permission forms
  3. Return the completed forms to Youth Crew Coordinator
  4. Shortly after you will be called in to receive training in Workplace Safety and Health.
  5. Once you receive your certificate, you can begin to work as jobs become available.

First Jobs 4 Youth (FJ4Y)

First Jobs 4 Youth (FJ4Y) offers part-time employment/training opportunities for local Youth every summer within SNA’s programming. Youth may work in the Building Belonging program (children ages 6-12); Sports; Environment and Open Spaces; or Front Desk work at the Community Office on Ellice Ave. After graduating in August, Youth receive Summer/Fall work placements with local employers, such as the University of Winnipeg, The WRENCH, and other businesses and agencies. Every spring, our office assists past participants with applications to the City of Winnipeg for jobs as Recreation Technicians at local community centres.

Mentors Needed!

We are seeking dedicated Summer time volunteers to join our First Jobs 4 Youth Post Secondary Mentorship Program.

As a mentor you will:

  • Be a role model for youth and develop a supportive on-going relationship with a young person.
  • Share your story of how you applied for and funded your post secondary education and inspire youth to follow your example.
  • Commit to 4-8 hours per month.
  • Receive mentorship training, criminal record checks, certificate, volunteer experience as well as a reference.

Friday afternoons are dedicated to Employment and Education training sessions. We will be touring the University of Winnipeg and Red River College to acquaint youth with the facilities and to help them become comfortable with the idea of attending University or College in the future. Our Training sessions include Workplace Safety and Health, a course in WMHIS.

We have 5 spots available for mentors in our First Jobs 4 Youth program starting this July.
