Homeowner and Rental Fix-Up Grant applications due May18

SNA’s Homeowner and Rental Fix-Up Grants are still available for 2012. SNA anticipates that the Winnipeg Housing and Homelessness Initiative will once again make home improvement grants available in our community. Availability will be pending on this funding and the qualifications described on the applications. The purpose of this program is to improve the exterior of properties in our community. This not only improves the looks but it adds to the value, safety, longevity and quality of the properties in our community.

Applications are due May 18. Work must be completed and receipts and photos submitted by September 30 in order to get reimbursed.

“Our West Central Times” newspaper accepting submissions

Our West Central Times is a community newspaper dedicated to covering the West Central neighbourhoods. We are looking for writers in the community to submit their articles, stories, poetry and prose for our next issue, coming out in June. We also accept photos, art and humour.

Deadline: May 9, 2012

OWCT is published by the Spence Neighbourhood Association and the Daniel MacIntyre/St. Matthew’s Community Association. If you are interested in submitting something, contact Cameron at SNA or Jen at DMSMCA. Cameron’s email is liaison@spenceneighbourhood.org, and Jen’s email is outreach@dmsmca.ca.

COMMUNITY RESIDENT HOME UP IN FLAMES, NO INSURANCE

On April 4th, a community resident of the Spence neighbourhood lost his home to an electrical fire. The owner did not have insurance. The homeowner managed to remain financially independent by selling recycled materials, but does not have funds for emergencies.
The Spence Neighbourhood Association, a non-profit community organization that works to support the community and connect residents to local resources, started its Emergency Response Project to help residents who suffer significant losses due to sudden unforeseen circumstances. Today we are requesting monetary donations to assist this displaced individual in finding a new place to live. The monetary donations will help the individual secure a damage deposit for housing, and any immediate furniture that will be needed. Any donations $25.00 or more will receive a Charitable Tax Receipt.
Please stop by our office at 615 Ellice Ave. Monday to Friday between 10:30 am to 5:00 pm, or visit our website at www.spenceneighbourhood.org and click on the “Donate Now” button on the right side of the home page to donate through CanadaHelps.org, and be sure to write that it is for the
“Emergency Response Project.”

Annual West-End Spring Clean-up – April 21

Hey West-Enders! Show your community pride and come out for the annual Massive West End Clean-Up. Head down to one of four locations at 1:00 pm on April 22. Bags and tools will be provided. Participants will be treated to a special lunch afterward, provided by the SNA Youth Crew.
