SNA Small Grants intake date – March 12

SNA administers Small Grants for community connecting projects and activities. These grants are available for community groups and organizations. Small Grants are available up to $5,000.
This year, priority will be given to first-time applicants and projects that work on community beautification.

Previous projects have included:

- Tree-banding on a street
- a street party
- a community meeting
- improvements to a community space
- cleaning up a back lane
- a public art project
- supports for a basketball team

There will be one intake date this year – March 12. All application must be in on or before the intake date.

Applications will be reviewed by the Small Grants committee in March. A final decision will be made at the March Board meeting.

Applications are approved according to the following criteria. They must:

- Show how the project meets the goal of community building/connecting
- Have identified support from local residents
- Be sponsored by local groups (not individuals)
- Not to be used for capital improvements to private property unless the property has been made available, free of charge, for community use and the improvements relate to proposed community use
- Not to be used for any individual gain, or material benefit
- Must be completed by December 2012

Eligible applicants will be invited to make a very short presentation to the Small Grants Committee at time and location to be announced.

Help fire victims in our community

Recent fires in our community have left many community residents in an emergency situation and many are now seeking the very basics to start over. In response to these tragic fires in the community, Spence Neighbourhood Association set up an Emergency Response Project for residents displaced due to situations beyond their control.

We are currently accepting gently used small household items to assist displaced residents. If anything else is needed, please see our Community Connector for a list of local resources at 615 Ellice Ave.

If you would like to make a cash donation, please stop by our office at 615 Ellice. A charitable tax receipt will be given to all donations over $10.00, or visit our website to make a donation on line at www.spenceneighbourhood.org, called CanadaHelp.org. You may specify which program/project you would like your donation to go towards.

What SNA 615 Ellice Ave. office is collecting for Emergency Response Project:

Toasters
Microwaves
Dishes, cups, cutlery, storage containers,
Lunch bags,
Linen, sheets and blankets
Winter coats
Kitchen Towels, Dish Clothes and non-perishable foods
We are NOT accepting any furniture items

Any women’s clothing or toy items can be donated to WCWRC at 640 Ellice Ave.

Tuesday: 1:30-6:00
Thursdays: CLOSED

Any clothing for men can be donated to John Howard Society at 583 Ellice Ave.

SNA Open House Friday, Dec. 16th 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Everyone is invited to come to the Spence Neighbourhood Association’s open house this Friday. This is an opportunity for staff, community members and funders to meet and mingle. Come learn about what we do at the SNA, enjoy some tasty snacks, and hear highlights from 2011.

SNA Family Holiday Feast, Sunday Dec. 11

The SNA Family Holiday Feast is this Sunday, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. It’s free for kids 6-12 and their families. There’s still time to register. Call 783-0292 and register your kids with their names and ages by Friday, Dec. 9.

There will be food, games, crafts, and maybe a special visitor will stop in!

Check out this video our kids did with Jr. Just TV. The kids came up with the song, and the Just TV folks produced it and filmed the video. The final product looks and sounds awesome.

SNA publishes kids’ stories

Kids participating in the Read for Rewards Literacy Project: Kids Storytelling Club had the opportunity to tell and write their own stories. Now those stories have been compiled into one 42-page book along with original artwork by the kids themselves. That book is available for download.

Keeping the Community Safe: 2011 Provincial Election Forum

Date: September 21, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Location: 430 Langside St. (Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre)

This FREE public forum is an opportunity for community members to listen to and ask questions of candidates running in the 2011 provincial election. The focus of this forum is community safety. Candidates from the different parties will speak about their positions on the issue. Audience members will then have an opportunity to ask the candidates questions about any issue they like.

Confirmed speakers include:
Andrew Swan (NDP, current MLA for Minto)
Belinda Squance (PC candidate for Minto)
Don Woodstock (Liberal candidate for Minto)

The Annual Inner City Community Garden Tour – August 25th

Date:Thursday, August 25^th

Time: 5:30-8:30pm

Meet at: Orioles Community Center 444 Burnell St. at 5pm

Join us at Orioles and kick off the night with snacks and a stroll around the Orioles Community Gardens built on an old hockey rink before taking off on a bus at 5:30 for a tour of 8 inner city community gardens!

Take the low floor bus or bring your bike for an evening of garden wisdom, inspiring stories, and to see some of the incredible changes that come with greening a community! Strollers, kids and all welcome! Donations accepted at the door for the Community Gardens that we visit.

Our West-Central Times pilot issue published!

It’s finally here! The first copy of the West End’s newest community newspaper, Our West-Central Times, is ready. We’ll be delivering it to homes in the Spence, Daniel MacIntyre and St. Matthew’s neighbourhoods, as well as various public locations around downtown. This joint publication by the Spence Neighbourhood Association and the Daniel MacIntyre/St. Matthews Association will be a space for West End community members to share their stories.

SNA youth photos on sale at Blacksheep Diner

During the summer of 2010, 12 youth from the the Rotary Leadership Program of the Spence Neighbourhood Association ages 8-15 went out into their community with digital cameras and documented their favourite parts of the neighbourhood. The photos are on display at Black Sheep Diner until July 31st.

All photos are $50. You can donate more if you want. Call Cameron at 783-5000 or liaison@spenceneighbourhood.org to purchase a photo.

By buying a photo you are supporting programs like this offered by the Spence Neighbourhood Association.

Mad props to Gerry Berrard for donating the frames and his overall commitment to youth in the community.
